The Chronicle
Mara came from the northern plains, where her mother taught her to bargain. Patience and a careful reading of the person across from her could secure a better exchange than an afternoon of argument. How she entered Sargon’s service is unknown, though her quick wits and ability to seduce men would have given him reason to take an interest.
Among the guards and soldiers of Babel, Mara moves with an ease that serves the Emperor well. Sargon relies on her to notice what others overlook and bring her findings back to him. She understands the men who carry out his orders, including how much can be achieved by speaking with the confidence of someone authorised to give them. Her position has also allowed her to intervene on Puzur’s behalf, saving him from execution.
Mara intends to build a life for them both in Babel. Puzur knows whom she works for, and she expects him to acknowledge what her connection to Sargon has afforded them. Their home and standing matter to her, and she has worked to secure them. She has little patience when he puts them at risk without considering her.
Why she remains so attached to Puzur is a question Mara cannot answer, much to her annoyance. His drinking and boasts give her plenty to complain about, particularly when he introduces her as his wife. She corrects him freely. Yet she will help steady the table beneath his drunken performance, then retrieve the cups spilt at his feet.
