The Chronicle

Sargon is an elder among Nimrod’s people, valued less for what he can carry than for what he can arrange. He is rarely seen in the hunting line. Instead, he works with the young scouts who range ahead of the camps, gathering word of tracks, water, ground, and the movement of animals across the plain.

From those reports, Sargon helps shape the party’s route. He has a patient ear for details that other people discard, and a habit of asking for the missing piece before a decision is made. When the people move north, the same instinct follows him into the long column. He sends runners between the sledges, hears the complaints of each tribe, and keeps the scattered parts from losing sight of one another.

Little is agreed about his life before he joined Nimrod’s people. One account names him a cup-bearer in Kish, serving Ur-Zababa, a chief remembered in some tellings as the first king of the world after the Flood. When Ur-Zababa died in suspicious circumstances, the account says, the boy disappeared and the name passed out of common use.

Sargon does not speak often of those years. When he does, he says only that serving cups taught him patience.
