The Chronicle
Asha comes from the foothills below the Zagros, the daughter of a goat-herder of high standing among his people. Mount Dena was visible from the summer grazing grounds, and its pilgrimage belonged to her family’s stories. An uncle attempted the climb when she was young, but the weather turned halfway up the face. His body was never recovered.
By her parents’ generation, the pilgrimage had largely been abandoned. The elders said the mountain’s measurements were already known; Asha believed the shifting shale had simply made the journey too dangerous. Accounts of the eastern approach remained familiar, passed down by those who knew the route. Although she had never climbed Dena herself, she knew it as the shortest approach from the plains and the most dangerous.
In Nimrod’s settlement, Asha works on the hemp line, braiding fibres into cord. Her mother taught her the three-leaf knot used to secure her dark hair, a practical pattern that holds more firmly than a simple twist. The stories of home remain equally familiar. Her people regard the firmament stone on Dena as a reminder of Noah’s covenant, and their elders warn against disturbing it.
Asha has a quick tongue and enough confidence to tell someone when they are being foolish. She is fiercely loyal to the few people she trusts, and her mistrust of those who share her wits can make her appear brittle. Among friends, she will occasionally let her guard down.
