The Chronicle
Tubar grew up beside Nimrod in the river camps of Shinar. After both boys lost their parents on the Buranun, they remained close, spending their childhood on the pier boards, throwing pebbles and watching boats drift south. When Nimrod was chosen as a runner for the hunt at twelve summers, Tubar gave him a bronze knife from his family’s store. The young hunter kept it close for the rest of his life, never to find out the true history of the Eridu Blade.
His green eyes mark him as a descendant of Cain. The elders warn that clever hands corrupt the soul, and Tubar’s ancestry gives them reason to be suspicious. Stories of the craftsmen of drowned Eridu are often repeated around the campfires. The young women are less troubled by his eyes, much to Nimrod’s amusement.
Tubar hunts with the other young men and helps maintain the sledges used to carry their kills home. His knowledge of timber makes him useful to the handlers, particularly when a heavy load becomes stuck and the oxen can no longer pull it free. The work also gives him reason to question how the sledges are built. When concentrating, his tongue moves towards the corner of his mouth.
Among friends, his humour is dry and his opinions plainly spoken. Too blunt for some. Tubar likes to be needed, especially by Nimrod, and takes on more work than he can comfortably manage. An unfinished job can occupy him for hours, particularly if he believes there is a better way of doing it.
