Chronicle

When Nimrod’s parents drowned after their boat capsized on the Buranun, he and Tubar were left without kin in the river camps. They kept close from that day. Their childhood was spent on the pier boards above the current, throwing pebbles, and watching boats drift south. The two boys would often try to outdo one another over things too small to matter.

At twelve summers, Nimrod was chosen as a runner for the hunt. Tubar marked the occasion with a bronze knife from his family’s store, wrapped in hide. Nimrod knew its weight at once, balancing it on one finger and turning the blade towards the sun.

He made a name for himself on the hunting line, displaying an instinct that led many to believe he had received a gift from the old gods. Nimrod watched the ground, trusted clean scouts’ reports, and had little patience for waiting once his instincts took hold.

Nimrod had a quick lip and little instinct for leaving a good argument alone. Among the younger hunters, only Dumuzi could match him for words per heartbeat. Nimrod could needle a friend, charm a gathering, or turn a complaint back on the person making it, usually before the elders had threatened to fill his mouth with silt.
